Lisa Mitchell, B.A., LL.B., M.E.S.

“Articulate, engaging and an obvious expert in her field”

Lisa was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia spending her childhood and young adult life in the Annapolis Valley. She attended Acadia University, graduating in 1987 with a joint undergraduate degree in History and Sociology. After Acadia, Lisa went on to study law at Dalhousie University; she was admitted to the Nova Scotia bar in 1992.

Lisa’s interest in the environment was clear from a young age when she spent countless hours exploring the forest and finding wild ‘pets’ to care for at home. However, this did not translate into a career path until 1990 when Lisa began volunteering with the Canadian Youth Working Group on Environment and Development. Her experience during 1990-92 working on national and international environmental projects led Lisa to the Dalhousie’s School for Resource and Environmental Studies where she completed a Masters in Environmental Studies, focusing on the regulation of pesticides in Canada and the United States.

During the period 1994 to 2000, Lisa worked with the federal Pest Management Regulatory Agency in Ottawa, on the policy and drafting of the revised Pest Control Products Act. At the same time, Lisa was engaged in a number of other legislative drafting projects for governments in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, including the 1995 Nova Scotia Environment Act.

Over the years, Lisa has provided advice and training on environmental legislation and policy in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island and Ontario. She is familiar with the legislative frameworks that address environmental concerns in all of these jurisdictions.

After almost 15 years of working in the field of environmental law Lisa has developed a reputation amoung colleagues and clients as a skilled practitioner who understands the subtleties of environmental law and can effectively communicate across disciplines.
